Where pine tar actually comes from
Long before it showed up in soap, pine tar was a Scandinavian survival tool. Made by slow-burning pine wood, the resulting tar was thick, sticky, and remarkably good at protecting things from harsh conditions — Vikings used it to seal and waterproof their ships, coating hulls and rigging to keep them from rotting during long voyages through cold, wet seas. It later became one of Scandinavia's major exports, valued anywhere wood needed protecting from the elements.
Somewhere along the way, people noticed pine tar did more than protect ships — applied to skin, it seemed to help with everything from dryness to irritation. That folk-remedy reputation stuck, and pine tar soap has been a staple of natural skincare ever since, long after most people stopped needing it to waterproof a boat.
Why we made our own version
We tried a lot of pine tar soaps before making ours, and most of them missed the mark in one of two directions — either so light on pine tar you couldn't tell it was in there, or so heavy-handed it was the only note in the bar. Neither felt right. We wanted the real thing: that dark, resinous, slightly smoky scent, without it taking over.
What's actually in it
Northern Pine Tar is built around cedarwood, juniper berry, Siberian fir, and black pepper — a blend meant to capture the feeling of walking through the dark, dense forests of the Pacific Northwest. Cedarwood and Siberian fir bring the deep, green forest character; juniper berry adds a sharper, slightly resinous edge; black pepper rounds it out with a little warmth and grit.
The result smells like the woods themselves — mysterious, a little untamed, and unmistakably pine tar, without overwhelming everything else.
